The 1994 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 represents one of the most remarkable performance cars of the C4 Corvette era—and one of the rarest. Built in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the 1994 ZR-1 was produced in extremely limited numbers, with just 448 examples built for the model year.

At the heart of the ZR-1 is the legendary 5.7-liter LT5 V8, an all-aluminum, 32-valve, four-overhead-camshaft enginedeveloped with Lotus engineering and assembled by Mercury Marine. For 1994, the LT5 produced an impressive 405 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 385 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The engine used sequential-port fuel injection, four valves per cylinder, and a sophisticated dual-mode intake system that allowed the ZR-1 to behave docilely around town while opening up its full potential at higher rpm.

Power was sent through a ZF six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. The ZR-1 was engineered as far more than simply a Corvette with a bigger engine. It featured a specially developed suspension, Electronic Selective Ride Control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, and wider staggered tires designed to put the LT5's substantial power to the pavement.

The ZR-1's body also differed from the standard C4 Corvette. Special doors, rocker panels and rear bodywork helped accommodate the car's wider rear wheels and tires. For 1994, the ZR-1 received unique five-spoke wheels wrapped in 275/40ZR-17 front and massive 315/35ZR-17 rear tires, giving the car an unmistakably aggressive stance.

Inside, the ZR-1 combined serious performance with the comfort expected from a flagship Corvette. Equipment included leather sport seats, power seats, electronic air conditioning, a Bose CD stereo, low-tire-pressure monitoring and the adjustable Selective Ride Control system. One of the ZR-1's signature features was its Power Key, which allowed the driver to select between Normal and Full engine modes. In Full mode, the LT5's secondary intake ports and valves came alive, allowing the engine to breathe through all 32 valves and deliver its full performance.

The 1994 ZR-1 measured approximately 178.5 inches long, 73.1 inches wide and 46.3 inches tall, with a 96.2-inch wheelbase and a curb weight of roughly 3,500 pounds.

When new, the ZR-1 was positioned as Chevrolet's ultimate Corvette and was capable of performance that rivaled some of the world's most exotic sports cars. Its combination of a high-revving DOHC V8, six-speed manual transmission, advanced suspension technology and limited production made it a true American supercar of its era.

Today, the 1994 Corvette ZR-1 stands as one of the most collectible C4 Corvettes, particularly because of its rarity and the unique LT5 engine. With only 448 built that year, the 1994 model represents a very small chapter in Corvette history—and the 405-horsepower LT5 makes it one of the most technically fascinating Corvettes Chevrolet ever produced.
